A great human being, Jim “Sadist” Konya, just passed away.
When we met in 2009 during their European tour, I had previously agreed with Nunslaughter to release a limited Ep commemorating the Italian gig, so we were chillin’ out before the concert and talking a bit, as you do. He picked up some records from the distro stall and asked how much that was. I did the math and it was around 60/70€. As it is my habit, I always give discounts to touring band members, so I asked him 40/45€ for the lot (can’t remember).
“No, that’s not right!”, he said, “here’s 60€. I am basically on holiday and meeting cool people like you. Money is not important and I want to pay like everyone else.” All this with that big, generous smile he had.
We met once again last year when they were again on tour, playing a couple of gigs in northeastern Italy. One of these places didn’t have a drum stool but he just didn’t care, he picked the nearest chair from a table nearby and stormed through the setlist just like he was sitting for lunch, it was quite a sight.
Well Jim, thanks for the good times, I hope you rock some nuns wherever you are now. You and those awful pants of yours.
